I struggled with this book, and sadly, I did a lot of skimming. I've read other coming-of-age stories, and this one just didn't hit the mark for me.

I had a hard time getting into the book, and I never really formed a connection with any of the characters. The dialogue felt a bit to young for the characters. Some places seemed a bit unbelievable, and at other times, it seemed like the characters were trying to hard to fit a specific mold.

The author does an admirable job of creating a lighthearted rom-com and including deep social themes such as race, class, identity, and role expectations (parental and sibling).

The writing itself was okay, technically, but there was something about it that held the reader at a distance. I've never read anything else by this author, so perhaps that is just their style. I'm not sure that I'd be interested in reading other books to find out.
