I wanted to love this book; I really did.

Let’s start off with the things I did enjoy. First, the opening line was absolutely fantastic. “Every superhero has an origin story. Every loser has an origin story, too”. I mean what a great start to this book, am I right?
I also adored the diversity in this book. We have the main character, Sunny, who is Korean American. As well as his two best friends, Jamal (Jamaican American), and Milo (Guatemalan American).
On top of the diversity, this book also tackled some topics like racism and prejudice which I loved, as I don’t see that mentioned in most of the books I read.
Lastly, I cannot deny that this book is STUNNING.

Sadly though, there were some things about this book that I didn’t enjoy. For one, it just felt like too much of a cheesy, cliché high school story. You have the extreme nerd and of course the bully to go along with it. As well as the idea that football is the only “cool” sport, and if you play anything else, you’re weird. But in my experience through four years of public high school, it’s just not like that.

Now, let’s talk about the romance. For me, it fell kind of flat. It just seemed too insta love for me. They met once and he decided he was in love with her. I just never saw any chemistry between them two. And the whole premise of coming up with a “fake” band to impress a girl is just so unrealistic.

Overall, it was a fun and entertaining read, just not one of my favorites.
