I am always a fan of underdog stories & this one did not disappoint. Author David Yoon sets the scene for a typical boy wants "out of his league" girl situation, but with a fresh take on the story, created by the tone of Sunny as well as the dynamic between both Sunny & his brother & with his 2 best friends, Jamal & Milo. A light read rom-com sure to give you small anxious butterflies as you become the keeper of all the secrets of the main character, knowing it will collapse in on itself eventually while still all the while hoping it all works out. Because the characters are quirky & it is a book meant to clearly be fun. That aside, there are still social themes woven throughout the story, such as race, personal identity & the balance of relationships, both romantic & familial, making it suitable for the YA crowd without getting too heavy. They also focus heavily on the music aspect, (duh!), with some gaming thrown in as well, which will sit better with some readers than others I would imagine in terms of interest level. Overall an easy lighthearted read!
