The world is awash in poetry these days. Ever since people as a whole realized that poetry did not have to rhyme and could instead take whatever shape and flow fit the work best, many have sought it as a fast track to literary success. Some of it is amazing and profound, some reads like Facebook ramblings that have been chopped up in order to make them seem important. "Sun Memos" is firmly in the former camp. This book is downright refreshing in the way it reads as poetry that was always meant to be poetry. The pieces in this collection tap into universal themes of existence and purpose in a way that is both beautiful and profound, but also accessible. This is a poetry book for everyone that frankly feels like a warm day at the beach, quieting the reader's mind until the only thing that can be heard is the strangely peaceful crash of waves. I am most impressed by Alberts' ability to write both moving and deep poems that require second and third readings to fully absorb, as well as simple pieces that effortlessly strike right at the heart of what it means to be a human attempting to live a decent life. This is the kind of poetry that illustrates what poetry is meant to do.
