This epic fantasy novel is easily my favorite of this year, maybe of any fantasy I've ever read. The expansive and vivid world building is imaginative and felt so real. The characters are all unique and three dimensional. The writing is as gorgeous as the cover. I'm already highly anticipating the sequel.
The plot has twists I never saw coming, one of which especially made me say out loud, "WHAT?" and I had to reread the passage to make sure of what I read. I'd never encountered such an imaginative plot surprise before that spun me 180 degrees while at the same time turned my beliefs upside down and inside out. I trusted the story enough to keep reading and loved it even more, which I didn't think was even possible.
Zephyr is someone I admire--she is clever, knows what to say or not say, and is ruthless to achieve her objective and keep her promises. Yet, she is also vulnerable, caring, and loyal. I absolutely loved the banter between Zephyr and Crow (another character I fell in love with) and am hoping they meet again in the sequel.
