4.5 stars. I need the next book NOW! I have never read Joan He, although she’s on my TBR. Now I think I need to get her other books stat. I loved this book!

I loved how almost all the main characters were women. The men in this book are the weak ones while the women are the leaders. It’s a nice change from the usual patriarchal society.

From the first chapter, my interest was piqued. This is a book about political machinations and battles, but because it is from Zephyr’s pov, we see it through the side of strategy. I found this so unique. So often, it is the warrior who is the main character and we see their prowess in the battlefield. Here, we see a main character who is on the losing side, but ends up winning most of the time because she uses her cunning and her knowledge of strategy to outdo the other sides.

There were a lot of twists, and I didn’t see any of them coming. When the first one happened, it took me a little out of the story, but that didn’t last long and soon, I thought the twist was a perfect addition. It changed the book in so many ways into an even more unique and interesting tale.

The book ends with multiple reveals that made me want the next book right now. It wasn’t a cliffhanger, but it left me with so many questions that I want to know what’s going to happen.
