I was given this book in exchange for a fair review thanks to BookishFirst.

Strike the Zither was such an anomaly for a young adult fantasy book. For one, the main character is so self-assured, cocky and arrogant which makes for a protagonist that is fun to read, even when her hubris becomes a detriment. For another, the setting, culture, and the story it’s based on is so well-researched, complex and detailed that I found myself amazed by the end of the book. The plans laid out, whether they go right or wrong, are brilliant and I must commend the author for their forethought and planning. The twist in the middle of the book threw me for a huge loop, and is what redeemed the book for me from being average to excellent. It added a new layer and a whole host of complications for Zephyr. My favorite books are the ones who throw their main characters into boiling water and watch them escape it with only their wits and determination. This one has that in spades for multiple characters, including some side ones. I highly recommend this book.
