Maybe the meat is in the rest of the book!

I usually enjoy memoirs and reading of how people overcame trials and difficulties in certain moments in their life. So I quite liked how the author integrated the introduction with a story. He had a funny "voice" to his writing. However, I didn't quite get hooked with the topic he presented. I have read Grit. It had me at chapter 1. The topic to be discussed was presented well and I was hooked. Maybe the book will get interesting after the first 3 chapters. But if I had this first look to go on, I would not buy the book. There were only general vague mentions of what other books have already touched on. Where is the distinct difference?
