I would give this more of a 3.5 stars, just not quite a solid 4. I love author Marie Lu. This story has moments that reminded me of her dystopian trilogy- but parts were hard to believe because it was YA. I had to keep reminding myself that it was a YA story so the liberties taken were ok if they weren’t realistic.
I loved our main characters. Our pop star had the teenage angst and emotional pull strong. His backstory was definitely one that pulls the heartstrings of the reader. The villain felt very expected. Nothing twisty or new.
The ending was tidy, and I loved how it left closure… but the possibility of another mission if the author decided to do one.
Now, the aesthetics. I loved the cover. It is what drew my attention initially at the bookstore. The included art print was gorgeous. It sold the book for me. Very well designed in my opinion. Always brownie points for fan art.
