Written in verse and first person point of view, this story could have easily been titled “Diary of a Starfish”. Author Lisa Fipps skillfully pulls her reader into Ellie’s world page by page. We experience first hand Ellie’s cleverness, sensitivity, and growing self-awareness. She’s not just a “character in a book” but truly a human being we love and admire.

With help from a new friend and a savvy doctor, Ellie discovers strength within herself and learns “a scale does not determine my worth.” With these discoveries her relationships with family and friends (and bullies) undergo some changes as well. She even learns what it feels like to act like a bully, a feeling she soon realizes she’s not comfortable with: “He might not deserve that kindness, but I know he needs it.”

You must read “Starfish” this year! Put it at the top of your TBR stack and Ellie will stick with you for a long time!
