Middle grade books tend to focus on large topics and this one tackled body image and self esteem issues with an ease that felt reassuring. I’d liken this to The Melting of Maggie Bean, another one of my favorite middle grade novels focused around these issues.
This was a tearjerker for sure, I found myself overwhelmed by the main character’s struggles that were so similar to my own as an overweight child. But there were also moments of brevity, much needed humor and endearing sections that made me fall in love with this story.
Ellie is a relatable character to anybody whose been bullied or made fun of because they didn’t fit in with society’s idea of how thin she should be. Young girls and even women long past school years will find this story to be empowering and heart wrenching, and it’s sure to grace the shelves of many home libraries for years to come.
