This is an important book for middle grader readers to read. It's the story of Ellie, an eleven-year old who has been fat-shamed since she was nicknamed Splash after jumping into the pool at her fifth birthday party. Ellie is dealing with bullying from peers and trying to cope with her mother who makes no secret of the fact that she wants Ellie to lose weight. This book deals with important topics such as self-acceptance, speaking up for oneself, and bullying. The book is written in verse making it a quick and accessible read for middle grade students. The author's note at the end of the book was eye-opening and powerful, too. Some readers may read the book thinking Ellie's story might be an exaggerated version of an overweight child's experience, but the author writes that the story is based on her own experience. I definitely hope this book makes it into many middle grade classrooms and libraries.
