This is a heartwarming and heartbreaking story about a young girl who has struggled with her weight most of her life. She has been bullied by the other kids ever since she wore a whale suit to the pool when she was 5 and did a cannon ball and got the nickname “splash”. Ever since then, the kids at school have called her names. Despite that, the pool and the water are their happy place. When she is in the water, she feels like she can be and do whatever she wants. There is no one who can stop her.
Now she is starting sixth grade and her best friend has moved away. Ellie now must navigate Middle School on her own and deal with the constant harassment from her peers and her own mother who is always counting calories and talking to her about bariatric surgery.
Luckily, Ellie has a dad who is on her side and she meets a new neighbor who helps Ellie cope with the struggles she faces throughout the day.
