I’m actually a bit speechless. I grew up bigger so I’ve heard some of these hurtful words Ellie hears from her parents, siblings, and classmates....
The emotional growth that takes place inside Ellie throughout the novel is something beautiful and I praise Lisa Fipps for having a therapist be the one to help Ellie. Not only is being heavier looked down upon but so is therapy....we as a society need to do a better job of normalizing these things (and many others).
Her therapist is able to help Ellie cope with hurtful words and constructively “fight back” without being mean or hurtful and becoming a bully herself. When she uses the articles against her mom, I was actually cheering for Ellie.
It’s really one of the best middle grade books I’ve ever read BUT it will be empowering to anyone of any age. In my opinion, this book and other books like it should be in every home.
