I had so many feelings throughout the journey of reading Starfish. As a mother, there were many moments that angered me and I could not believe (mixed feelings here, could also believe) how the mother was in this book. There are some who may approach this book and the bullying as something that 'would never really happen.' Let me tell you, it happens. And Starfish is a perfect example of how bullying and verbal abuse can take place in ones own home. A place where a child should feel supported and loved by all, can be a place that they want to escape.
Ellie is such an outstanding character. Her self-soothing methods are common and as she learns better coping mechanisms, she blossoms are a young person. There were many times I wanted to reach through the pages and hug her!
As a novel done in verse, it is very accessible to any age and I highly recommend to anyone!
