Lisa Fipps writes Ellie to be sweet and endearing and uses a unique writing style to appeal to her readers. Since the main character Ellie likes poetry, Fipps writes her story in the form of a poem. While I appreciate that the poem still reads like a traditional story, even though the words appear on different lines, I sometimes found that the line breaks occurred in strange places. However, this style might be more approachable for younger readers who find it intimidating to see so many words on a page. The cover is bright and draws readers in, and clearly relates well to the title of the story. I'd love to read more because I enjoyed the use of different languages (Spanish and Yiddish) in just this short excerpt. I'm also intrigued by Catalina and want to see how the friendship between Ellie and Catalina continues to develop.
