Thank you to BookishFirst and Penguin for the opportunity to read this ARC.

When I read the sample, I was immediately hooked. The concept of teleportation as uploading consciousness into a computer, transferring the data to your destination and then 3D printing a body before downloading the consciousness back in was so intriguing--and lucky for me, it becomes a pretty big plot point of the book.

Jessica's parents are scientists who research extinction events on planets light years from Earth and left her when she was eleven. Now seventeen, Jessica's parents have decided to force her to leave her life on Earth behind and join them in researching the mass extinction event on Carver 1061c. She is supposed to wake up on a ship orbiting the planet, instead she wakes up on the planet to dead bodies and a familiar face.

This is a book that's going to stick with me. We have a mystery in space; characters coming into their own and achieving things they never would have dreamed; friendships; bureaucracy; alien civilizations; adventure--and much, much more. The story is YA, recommended for 12-17 year olds but had more than enough action, mystery and suspense to keep this adult entertained. There are a few loose ends that really make me wish for a sequel or even a novella to tie them up, but a great sci-fi story overall!
