Star Splitter
By Matthew J. Kirby

You may know Matthew Kirby from his Assassin Creed series or maybe you’ve read The Clockwork Three, but Star Splitter is on a whole different level.

Years in the making, the author opens with an excerpt from Robert Frosts poem of the same name, giving us a glimpse into the inspiration behind his work.

Jessica Mathers is a 17 year old girl who is filled with anger at having to leave the only home she’s known for the last six years. Her parents are waiting for her to meet them light years away from Earth but she’s doing so against her will.

The author does an amazing job showing that Jessica’s anger is towards her parents and not those who are only doing the actual work of sending her through space. She might be a disgruntled teen but she still respects authority.

Each chapter is labeled concisely and does “travel” from Before to After and back again. This refers to Jessica’s experiences in her travels on the planet Carver 1061c and the ships she is printed on. The dangers she faces are unknown since she never read all of what her mother sent her. Stubbornness is rampant in her, which helps in some situations. She comes across wildlife that is scary but harmless.

Jessica must fight her way through an underground city that no one knew existed according to her research. Finding out what killed the planet is one reason why Jessica and her parents are sent to Carver 1061c. The author provides us with just enough mystery and intrigue to keep the pages turning. Which Jessica will we see next? Will she make it to the homestead? Who or what is chasing Jessica through the city?

When Jessica finally finds the homestead she’s shocked to find she’s not alone. The person standing there waiting for her is a stranger who seems to know all about her. When that which has chased her thru the underground city finds the homestead, a fight for their lives ensues. Only there’s more than one fight going on…who should return to earth and who shouldn’t. One Jessica has lived through horrific events and won’t tell the other, while the underground city had its own terrors the second Jessica won’t share either. Both are chased after the same thing only one survived.
Waking up back where it all begins and to find out her parents aren’t who they think they are… well to me this could lead to another book, because she never gets to see her parents in the end…
This was a nail-biting read for me, always wondering what would be on the next page. Where would I be taken next? Who would be next? A must read for sure!
