This book is set in a future where humanity has learned to travel through the galaxy and is studying new planets. In short time, the author presents us with an ethical dilemma like only a good sci-fi novel can. That immediately draws you into the story that unfolds from two points of view and times. The chapters alternate, one present time and one past. The author does a good job with the pacing as each past chapter provides a little insight into what just happened in the present chapter. I found myself doing the "just one more chapter" thing, but that really meant two more chapters due to the alternating POVs...
I found the main characters not necessarily likable, but understandable. I got where they were coming from and appreciated their growth through the book. I think the secondary characters were well written and I'd actually love to read more about some of them, if they author were to expand the world of Star Splitter.
Unfortunately, I didn't really like the ending... I get what the author was doing, but it was a very "Soprano's fade to black" like ending for some of the characters and I prefer more concrete closure.
