I am generally not big on sci-fi as a genre nor am I a big reader of YA - so this combo admittedly did not appeal to me to begin with. I thought that the opening was okay, but I found it all a bit too wordy for my taste - I felt it dragged a little as a result. Not bad, but not for me!
