Truly a joy to read! I highly recommend!
I rarely read modern young adult books, but this one sounded interesting because it’s about a young man (Bao) who ends up trapped in a flute after an evil witch curses him. A wealthy nobleman’s daughter (Lan) vows to help him find a way to break the spell. Together they embark upon an epic journey where they encounter war, devastating disease, blood magic, and romance.
So much happened in this 270-page story I couldn’t summarize it all even if I tried. In addition to all the things I mentioned above, there was family drama, unrequited love, class issues, and drug addiction. I was very impressed with the author’s writing style and how she could weave all of these issues into the story in a succinct way. I enjoyed reading about Bao and Lan’s adventure so much, I plan to read the author’s other books to learn the back stories of some of the characters (Commander Wei, Xifeng, Empress Jade.)
