Magical tale of family and love
This was my second fantasy read of the year, and I truly enjoyed this one. It was a quick read and not difficult to follow as I find some fantasy reads can be at times.
I loved that this was based on a cast of Vietnamese characters, and I could relate to some of the themes in this book such as filial duty.
This book centers around Bao, a physician's assistant, who is in love with Lan, the daughter of a royal family. He encounters the legendary river witch who casts a spell on him. Only one who truly loves him can break this spell. Bao sets out on a journey to find a way out of this spell. This puts him on a quest with Lan to reach the Gray City in time to seek answers about his family and past.
The heart of this story was a tale of love and family ties. It also focuses on themes of filial duty, destiny, and true love.
