Song of the Crimson Flower was one of the most unique books I've read in a long time. The way folklore and magic worked in the story was so fascinating, I couldn't put it down! I read the entire book in one evening, and have even re-read it since then. I've had a really hard time rating this book, because while I love the concept there are a few things I wish went differently.

Firstly, I wish this was split into 2 books. There were certain elements of the plot that didn't feel totally fleshed out. On the other hand, some things dragged on. Maybe just one book with better pacing? I'm really torn on this point.

Second, I desperately wanted more character background. There were a few characters that I didn't feel close to at all. It almost felt like there was nothing at stake for the minor characters. I really wanted to care more about the whole cast.

Overall, I still loved this book! I think I'm just nitpicking because I loved it enough to want more. Since reading this book, I've read everything else by Julie C. Dao and continue to look forward to her future works!
