First of all, I just adore Julie Dao's covers and Song of the Crimson Flower is no exception. I love its simplicity and yet it connects perfectly to the story. And poppies just happen to be my favorite flower, so it just resonated with me.

I must confess that I haven't yet read one of Dao's other books, but I'm glad I had the opportunity to read this one. It's a lush, superbly written YA romantic fantasy. I'll definitely put her on my TBR from now on.

Lan is a wealthy nobleman's daughter and Bao is the poor physician's assistant in love with her whom she cruelly rejects. When Bao is cursed, they must journey together to try to break the spell. What follows is an engrossing tale of war and blood magic.

I loved the richness of the Vietnamese culture and fairy tales that infused this story and fell hard for the characters in all their vulnerability. I can't wait to read more from this author!
