I was very excited to get back into this world again, and DOUBLY excited that Wei was going to get a new love interest because he deserves better than to mourn Xifeng forever. Give this man a happy ending, please and thank you.
Lan was a difficult protagonist to root for at first because she is rather spoiled and entitled, so there were times when I wanted to shake her and be like, "stop being such a Rich Jerk, girl!" But over the course of the novel, I was rooting for both her and Bao.
I really enjoyed the fairy tale feel (love me a book with a True Love curse).
While this is a standalone novel, it's definitely helpful to have read Forest of a Thousand Lanterns/Kingdom of the Blazing Phoenix first; you'll get Wei's backstory as well as knowledge of other mentioned characters.
