Although the First Impression doesn't convey all that is to come in this book, it sets the stage nicely. I have a good feel for who Lan and Bao are and would gladly follow them on adventures across their country. Lan is born into a family of wealth and privilege, while Bao is an orphan raised in a wealthy home and treated poorly by his adopted mother and adopted brother. Lan is shocked when she learns that Bao has been impersonating his adopted brother in nightly visits to her home to serenade her and rejects his overture of love when he finally admits the truth. Your heart can't help but hurt for both of them when she realizes her mistake, only to learn that Bao has disappeared before she has a chance to rectify her mistake.
