I said in my initial first impression of the book that I felt that a "Little Women" retelling with POC would be an interesting take on what is widely considered to be an American classic. And, in many ways, I still feel that I was right. Morrow takes the same four characters we know and love: Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy, and adds aspects to their characters that is unique to their history as women of color.

Meg is haunted by her memories of slavery, Jo is passionate because of the same, Beth is dogged by an illness that does not seem to be found in white people, and Amy is a little bit scared that the Civil War will not end in the Marchs' favor. These new perspectives add a new shade to some of the dilemmas they face: double standards, stereotypes, and precarious living that honestly does not seem to be too far off from some of the struggles black people in America face even today.
