I think to think of this as a retelling is doing it a disservice, it's inspired by Little Women with similarities, but it's a very strong book on its own merit! I love that Morrow set this in the Roanoke colony and I'm so ashamed that I didn't know anything about it before reading this book! This was really, really sweet. The heart of Alcott's book is still there, this book is about a close knit family with four different sisters who all want different things out of life.

I think I also love how each daughter has her own story, and no one is shamed for her choice in life. And if Beth is meant to have sickle cell anemia, what a clever way of integrating that! Honestly, it's not a retelling, it's a completely new re-imagining of Little Women and I'm really glad I know about it. I'd love to see what English lit classes in high school do with it, and some of the assignments that come from it.
