I was immediately swept up in 14-year-old Amethyst's whirlwind energy as she "introduces" us to the three other March sisters and their Mammy. As I learned more deeply about the March family's way of life on the Freedmen's Colony of Roanoke Island both during the "old life" and presently, it is clear that this story is very important. The perspective of a Black family during the Civil War era is one that needs to be told, and I am both thrilled and honored to be able to learn through the eyes of the March family.

The cover of So Many Beginnings is beautiful and gives me a sense of being invited in to share in the lives of the March family and learn about an important time in history...their history.
