It’s tough to know what to think about this story excerpt. The chapters vary wildly in tone, leaping from what seems to be a kidnapping to a view of an attempted suicidal woman to a counseling session about divorced people. The mood alters accordingly, jerking us from one emotional extreme to another. None of these chapters hang together; they spark confusion and frustration in almost equal measure.

The dialogue and characters are well written. But the disjointed nature of the storytelling makes it impossible to be invested in them. Perhaps the plot will resolve itself as the story progresses. But I can’t bring myself to care.
