Kaseke's writing is gorgeous and evocative. It can be more difficult to flesh out the characters in short stories, but I was quickly drawn into all of the stories, and the characters jumped off the page despite relatively little time to develop them. The characters and stories are vibrant and diverse, and it doesn't feel like Kaseke is preaching or sanctimonious despite the emphasis on minority and immigrant women. Hopefully this will impact readers who don't typically read a lot of articles or fiction about immigrants.

This is Kaseke's debut work, and I really hope she writes more fiction whether that be a novel or more short stories, as I would love to read more of her work. I also suspect she has an interesting story herself and perhaps a memoir will also come down the road. Regardless, this is a writer worth reading and following.
