Important Lens on the Immigrant Experience

The first two stories of this collection provide a glimpse into both the micro aggressions facing immigrants, particularly black immigrants, and the flaws in the immigration system. The writing evoked strong feelings and placed the reader into the head of the main characters which was an effective approach for shifting the lens on the story of immigration from the political language and dehumanization so often used to discuss the issue. The two stories did draw me in thought the styles and characters felt so similar that at first I was unsure if they were interconnected. I am not often a fan of first person narratives in short fiction, which is likely a big piece of why these did not connect as well for me.
