The author peels back layers of trauma like an onion - the trauma of an absent father, the trauma of racism and violence, the trauma of a cruel, older first lover and the trauma born of geopolitical strife and not knowing where you truly belong. The main character travels back to the scene of of her worst trauma to try to reclaim her sense of self.
