I was very impressed by the first half of this book and felt the second half took a big nosedive. I loved the first half, describing the island, the characters, setting up most of what's to come, and the mystery around Allison's death. However, by the second half, I found there was an unnecessary amount of discussion of race and class, but in the sense that the narrator was proud she didn't view herself as being better than others, even though she still projected some of this. I thought the ending felt very flat and the overall progression seemed to be disappointing. This started off very strong but really didn't do it for me.
This book has received some awesome marketing and pre-press but I think it just missed the mark.
