This is not your typical murder mystery - and is barely a mystery at all. The plot follows Claire years after the mysterious death of her older sister, Alison. Claire was only 7 when Alison died, so she never really got to know her. A chance encounter in New York City years later brings Claire into the path of Clive Richardson, one of the men originally arrested after Alison's death. Claire then begins an obsessive quest to find out all she can about Alison and this man who may have been involved.

This book explores what happens in the aftermath of sudden tragedy and how it effects the lives of those around the event. Claire and her parents' lives were obviously changed after Alison's death, but Clive's life was also negatively impacted. He lost his job, lost his family, had to leave his beloved island, and ultimately ended up alone and sad. The mystery of what happened to Alison was never resolved, but I think that is crucial for the story. The mystery and pain continues to linger, much as it would in real life.

Full of complex characters, thought-provoking themes, and vivid settings, Saint X is an insightful study of familial relationships, social divides, and coping with grief.
