Alison is a freshman at Princeton vacationing with her family at Saint X, a Caribbean island known for its beautiful beaches and tourism. When Alison goes missing and her body is found days later, two locals are arrested but then let go due to lack of evidence. We then move forward to follow Alison’s little sister Claire into adulthood where she meets paths with one of the accused. ⁣

I was really excited to read this book. When I was in college the Natalee Holloway case occurred and it really affected me. I was expecting a mystery/thriller/suspense. This book was NOT that. It was more about coming to grips with a tragedy, how we grieve, and how Alison’s death affected her sister’s life. The style of writing was unique; it transitioned from third to first person, but at first was hard to get used to. There were many parts that I could have skimmed over; details in New York that were too in depth. I think this book did a great job of portraying Alison. Her naïveté and youth. Her disgust with her privilege, but the lack of maturity to analyze it; not understanding the danger she poses to the locals as she flirts and forces herself into their daily lives. All in all, it was an interesting book, worth a read, but dull at times. ⁣
