This is such an excellent read for a book club. For those looking for a thriller, you will he disappointed. But it’s a tautly written novel that examines privilege, race, class, hypocrisy, grief, and the ever present effects of trauma on a family. I was so invested in Claire’s story, and to see how she coped (or failed to cope) with the death of her sister.

While I loved the writing and the storyline and the examination of the themes mentioned above, I did feel like the first half of the novel was written much better than the second half. I also found the ending was unsatisfying.

This is a difficult novel to classify, genre wise, but it will make you think, feel, mull things over, and many of Alison’s observations will resonate with you the reader as well.
