Atmospheric, but not what I was hoping for.

Anything "faux-documentary style" and mixed media gets my attention instantly and that was something I really loved about this atmospheric read. Kate Alice Marshall does a great job at setting up the feel of this story -- a game between some high schoolers that takes them through an unforgiving ghost world. It bounces around from journal entries to text messages and other formats, keeping things interesting and fast paced. Up until a certain point, at least.

Unfortunately, this book felt a little too long for what it was. These group of friends had to survive through seven gates, but after the first few it felt repetitive. The gates began to blend together and dull the adventure. While I struggled through the plot, the characters weren't much to lean on. Relationships were sudden and there wasn't anyone I really wanted to cheer for.

The desire to know how it all wrapped up was the only thing keeping me going after a certain point and, well, that was disappointing for me, too.
