Started off strong

I really enjoyed the First Look for this book and found the premise interesting. A young boy and his sister buy a ring for their mother's birthday but soon find out it has magical properties. Chaos ensues as they and their friends realize that a heavenly war is underway. It started off strong but I found it somewhat fizzled for me about half-way through. I appreciated the history and religious references (usually religion makes me run away from a book) but I felt like the LGBTQ+ storyline was superfluous. I applaud the author for working this into the story but it seemed like there were "checkboxes" being ticked for things a kid would have to deal with. I think that this book will definitely appeal to the age appropriate audience, especially fans of Percy Jackson. For me, it was hard to stay interested after about the middle of the book.
