The summary makes me think of books like Rick Riordan's with adventure & myths. However the reveal of the ring being magic (which is in the sample) was odd to me. We have no way of knowing why the characters would think the ring was magic, just that it's an odd coincidence to have the ring and hear the dog. And the Jewish family aspect seems a bit forced to me in the bit we get to read. I'm not even 100% sure which of the parents are Jewish or if they both are and not practicing their faith.
