Remembrance introduces us to a young slave girl, Margot, and her grandmother and sister who have been sold to a family in Louisiana. Then there's Mother Abigail, the overseer of the mythical and mystical place called Remembrance, a safe haven for runaway slaves. Mother Abigail, a voodoo priestess that understands the power that she possesses and uses it for good, creating a hiding place from slavers that is in plain sight. Winter is her young protégé, who also possesses powers, but doesn't have the understanding of her gifts. Next, there's Gaelle, a nurses aide, in present day time period, that is fascinated with a resident in a nursing facility that doesn't communicate with anyone, she just watches television. The eeriness that surrounds her is indescribable, but there's a thread of darkness that she emits.

Remembrance is a tale of strength, courage and wisdom as it centers on three different storylines, changing of time periods and a common denominator that aligns the characters into one seamless hem. The segueing between the timelines and plots are a bit choppy and confusing, but the intrigue that the author has infused in this read, keeps you riveted as each scene reveals another layer to this unusual storyline. Life, death, and healing from their escape presents many challenges filled with tears, fears, and determination. Remembrance was not as I expected, in that I was looking for a basic slave tale, and the author orchestrated many storylines that challenges the reader with the revelation of supernatural gifting, time and connections, as well as life or death, freedom or bondage. Life is a struggle and only the strong survive...if only you can arrive at Remembrance...your change may come.

Remembrance is a place brimming with mystique and has an aura that makes you question the realism of it. Could it just be a mythical setting that beckons runaway slaves? Is there such a place and how will these characters all tie in together? Who is the infamous Josiah? All of this erupts within the 400+ pages of Rita Woods cryptic novel. 3.78
