What if escaped slaves were able to hide in a magical, hidden town called Remembrance? Well, this is exactly the premise of this book I received through Once Upon a Book Club. The story started out strong, lagged, got strong again, but then the ending ultimately landed me at a 3 star rating. Alternate endings for two of the characters would’ve been much better in my opinion. Perhaps the ending is supposed to project hope for the future… but it just felt sad and confusing to me.
I typically love magical realism but this one just didn't work for me. I did enjoy opening the gifts, and I will be passing the whole kit and caboodle onto a friend in the hopes they enjoy the book and gifts more than I did. Hey, it's worth a shot, right?
