I love historical fiction and haven't encountered one with the underground railroad for a while! And this one seems to take it in an interesting new direction, mixing in different alternate timelines and storylines of characters with an element of magical realism. It definitely grabbed my attention with its potential. However....while it was still good, I don't think Woods brought the concept to its full capacity. Unfortunately, parts of it fell short. The characters themselves were amazing - fully developed, each with their distinct voice. But the movement between storylines and character perspectives was disjointed and timelines could easily be confused. Some storylines seemed more fleshed out than others. So overall, a good read that could have been developed further.
