I am not sure I can understand this book from the first impression

The Synopsis made me want to enter a first impression of this book. I am a fan of African-American stories. However, the book starts with many expressions that I have never heard of and I could not understand. I cannot read a book and use my phone to search google every 2 seconds. I would suggest you add footnotes with translations or something.
