Fortuna was in her seventies and a longtime slave in her mistress Catherine's household. She had spirits visit her and tell her of upcoming unfortunate events. She was able to warn her Master James Harrigan of an upcoming flood. He was able to move his cotton out of the warehouse so it wasn't destroyed as others were. She foretold a great Yellow Fever epidemic, and they were able to leave the city to protect themselves. Then she was warned of impending doom too late. The family came galloping in from New Orleans with a dead daughter, an almost dead son and a crazed mother needing her son to be alive. Catherine demanded "or else" that she save her son, that she knew she knew how to. Fortuna knew the usual herbs and things to remove fevers etc. but the healer was 17-year-old Margot. The son was saved but the next morning Master James had died from the Saffron Plague,
