I've always found it interesting to learn about different cultures as well as periods of history. While it can be difficult to become emotionally invested in a story and various characters in just a few short chapters, this story did exactly that. Remembrance is so much more than a beautiful cover.

It takes us from the earthquake in Haiti about a decade ago that tore Gaelle's family apart, to Cleveland, where Gaelle lives currently and works as an aide in a nursing home with a mysterious elderly patient who never speaks, and back in time to Louisiana in the mid-1800s, where we are introduced to a young slave named Margot, who lives with her Grandmere, sister Veronique, and the family who own them.

While the idea of owning other people is ghastly to even think of, it also shows the strange dynamic that coexisted in some of these situations. While I am of the belief that this was the exception to the rule, Margot herself says that she does care about the children of her mistress, and she and her grandmother seem to have some power over their owners with regards to healing abilities. I am definitely looking forward to reading more of this, and I can't wait to find out what happens next!
