I have no knowledge of the Red Ledger or the author, Meredith Wild, so I start with a blank slate: a thirst for understanding but given only a tantalizing sip...

who is Isabel and what memories of Tristan does she hold?

Why has Tristan lost his memories?

How do the lives of Tristan and Mateus intersect?

In this delicious appetizer of a first impression read, I was captivated by the richness of the descriptions that introduce Tristan and Mateus and could almost taste the Cachaca, with its muddled limes, though I actually have no idea if the sugarcane would crystallize on my tongue.

Such an urbane setting, so civilized and sophisticated, so unsettling to discuss the ins and outs of the murder of Isabel.

I'm hooked.

Now I have to find out what happens. I am compelled to enter this world, though it is foreign in every way.

What a remarkable way to introduce a story.
