It's unclear where in the story this excerpt was taken from, but if it came from the beginning it definitely just dives right in without giving much in the way of backstory or development. If it's from later in the story, I imagine that it would be more interesting given context- as a dialogue heavy excerpt, I didn't feel like I got a real feel for what the story is here or who the characters are.
