I'm not a regular suspense reader, preferring history and romance to mystery and assassinations. Perhaps that explains the appeal of The Red Ledger: the missing history and hints of romance in the narrator's story make the mystery and suspense compelling. I can only hope that any deaths it takes to balance the ledger won't destroy the chances for a happy ending.
