Choppy writing, flat dialogue

I didn't connect with any of the characters, the story, or the promise of an "uncovering the past" adventure. I don't think it's the length of the excerpt (only 5 pages) that's the problem; I've been sucked into books in less time than that before. The writing style seemed choppy and the dialogue felt flat.
